What should I be looking for in a 1987 BMW 325is?
I am looking at and thinking about buying a 1987 BMW 325is and was wondering if anyone could give me some advice as to what to look for when I go to check out the car. like are there common problems with the model or year? or common issues with BMW in general? anything really would help. thanks. What should I be looking for in a 1987 BMW 325is?The first thing I do when looking at a E30 is the trunk and the seal area. Rust from people banging things in and out of the trunk scratches the paint under the lip. With the 'i" model I would pay very close attention to the coolant since those motors crack the head once in a while. People stick a bunch of stop leak in and then try and sell the car. The differentials are prone to failure specifically the input shaft bearing a.k.a Pinion bearing. Then off to the gauges if some don't work a new SI board is in the works. Decent ones that will last are upwards of 300 bucks. Then the timing belt even if the seller swears up and down it was changed recently change it again with a new water pump and tensioner at the least. Also get a backup ECU. Thoes computers seem to be failing a lot these days. 23 years is a respectable time for them to last but the 5 6 and 7 computers up to 87 seem to only die when someone makes a big mistake when working around it.
