Shops would normally cost you $200-$250.. DIY is cheaper..How much would it cost to replace a front wheel bearing on a 1998 Vw Jetta?Normally, about 2 hours of labour at the posted hourly rate + parts. The bearing normally is sold with an installation kit (clips, lubrication, axle nut, seal, etc.) and runs from $59-90 USD depending upon where its bought. Also, in some cases you may need a wheel hub assembly, depending upon the shape of the hub when its pressed out of the bearing. Hub assemblies cost from $30 to $100 USD, again depending upon type and where its bought.
Labour varies widely across the USA (if that's where you are) from as little as $50 USD per hour to $160 USD here in the San Francisco Bay Area. The job will always be less at a independent shop (non VW dealer) vs. an authorized VW dealership service department. This is a straight forward type of job, so almost any good service shop should be able to it. I'd only make sure that they are using a quality bearing assembly; I've seen some from China, India, %26amp; Vietnam that have been of very poor quality control. A good job can be undone by the usage of poor materials. I've spun and rejected a fair number of bearings that were new for various reasons including excessive noise, excessive play and poor finish. Good work deserves and good part.
Hope this helps, a car nut.
PS: The front wheel bearing is a double roller bearing and is not two seperate bearings as the link in the answer below shows! It is a pressed in bearing that needs a special puller assembly to install or remove the bearing or a old style press to press out the old bearing assembly and press in the new one.How much would it cost to replace a front wheel bearing on a 1998 Vw Jetta?A bearing will cost about 拢18/$30 and a couple of hours labour, that should be about 拢80/$120How much would it cost to replace a front wheel bearing on a 1998 Vw Jetta?$3-400.00
