One adds to what already is there. Also, one does not change the oil either. If you read your manual, the oil that goes into a VW ('06) is changed ONLY at the dealership, as VW uses a special kind of oil, not the kind that is sold at WalMart or the auto parts store. If you change the oil yourself with oil other than what is recommended by VW, you risk damaging the engine. Read your manual and you will get the answers you need.
