What type of oil to use for 71 VW bus?

Hey all, helping a friend change the oil on his 1971 Volkswagen bus and we're not sure what type of oil to use. Weight, brand, all info is needed and welcome. Thanks! What type of oil to use for 71 VW bus?It depends where you live.

In Mexico.. 30-50 for an engine with a few miles on it, because the heat will thin it out too much

In Canada near the permafrost line.. 5-30 because you need to be able to get it started...

in general areas.. with 60-90 temps.. plain old 30 wt. deterg. oil works just fine.

YOu will need four quarts and you will have a bit left over unless you have one of the later engines with a fitted oil cleaner.

Do not overfill your engine.. just pour in 3 quarts and then add about half of the 4th, wait, and then check the dipstick.

also important.... clean off the oil screen in the drain ...

its about 2.5 quarts so you will need to buy 3. the brand of oil makes no difference but the weight is VERY VERY important. the oil is needed to cool the engine properly and using the wrong weight will help destroy the motor faster. where you live plays a large part in the weight of the oil you need to use, and different seasons require different weights for an air cooled motor.

for the USA (i assume thats where you are?) the best way go about the oil is to use Straight 30w in the summer, (i use 10w - 30.) and to use 20w in the winter. i usually run 30w in the winter in Pennsylvania...What type of oil to use for 71 VW bus?I have always run 30 wt. detergent in my 1971 and 1971 bus. I have been using 30 wt. in my buses since 1976. However, I live in California. Most of my pals use 20-50 wt.in theirs. What type of oil to use for 71 VW bus?
Any 30 weight is good. Clean the oil strainer also. 2.5 quarts most just add 3 qts. What type of oil to use for 71 VW bus?call your local autozone and they can pull up all the correct info for you.

my guess would be 4.5quarts of 10-20 or 5-20, you can also read the dipstick to tell how much oil you have in there when you refill it.
