I have a 2001 BMW 325i. It needs a new transmission - the estimate to fix it is $4-5k. The car would be worth maybe that much once I get the transmission fixed, and since it has a new problem every other month, I am ready to get rid of it. I don't want to spend the money to fix it - it still looks brand new - just doesn't drive.
What are the options for getting a non-working car off your hands? What to do with my BMW 325i that will cost more to fix than its worth?Try to sell it for $3000 and mention that it needs transmission work. Maybe someone need your car as a parts car.
If not, check with some other shops and see if can install a used trans for less.
The government are a little tighter with car donations. The don't give you blue book or standard $2500 anymore. The receipt will be what the charity will get at the auction. What to do with my BMW 325i that will cost more to fix than its worth?

Look somewhere else for the repair... just a simple swap should only cost about $1500-$2000... a complete rebuild of my (albeit cheaper) 4-speed Dodge cost $2800.What to do with my BMW 325i that will cost more to fix than its worth? You could get a junkyard tranny for about 1000-1500 and throw that in the car to make it move so you can sell it for 4000-5000. just a idea.
otherwise if your close to me (I am in NJ) I would be interested in the carWhat to do with my BMW 325i that will cost more to fix than its worth?
Did you check noreverse.org?
BMWs from that era have known problems with the transmission not being able to go into reverse. People say that two different transmissions have the same problem but with two different underlying defects. One is a big deal and the other not so much.
If it is not that problem but yet another junk transmission that fails at relatively low miles you might want to post your problem on BMWs forums and see if you can get another estimate. Mostly, I would just throw the BMW off a cliff...metaphorically speaking of course.
I have driven BMWs for years and I will never buy another one.
