Can I import a slightly different European version of a car (for example a diesel BMW) to America?

I realize there are emissions/safety restrictions on cars and that's why you can't bring in a Peugeot 206 or a Lada, but would there be any problem bringing in a car that is simply a slightly different version of a car that already sell in the US. For example, would it be possible to bring in an Audi RS4 or BMW M5 wagon, even though only the sedan versions are available in the US? Why not just wait a year. BMW is bringing diesels to America if not this fall, then next spring.



You can't inport cars like you used to be able to in the '70's and '80's (grey market). All cars have to past crash tests, emisions, etc. Bill Gates tried to import a Porsche 959. He bought 2 so the governing body could crash one for testing.
