i dont knowWhat type of engine oil can one use in a 1990 BMW motorcyle other than BMW brand?Chevron 10-30
I would use a good 20-50 regular(not synthetic) motor oil. I like Valvoline and Castrol brands.
I have worked at BMW, Honda, Kawasaki and Yamaha shops and they all used 20-50 non manufacture type brands right out of the big drum. I dont remember any of them using their own brand oils for service but this was in the 1980's. Im not sure if things have changed. You might want to check this link out.
Good Luck!

I have used several types in the past but I prefer Castrol as my first choice, then valvoline and right on down the line.
And that is when I had my bike. Currently don't have a bike but maybe next year. The wife really wants me to get a bike for next year.What type of engine oil can one use in a 1990 BMW motorcyle other than BMW brand?
Check out the Service Letters, (Eg. 'SE`),
on the BMW oil.
Then get the same designation and specified
service weight, (Eg. 10W 30)in any high quality oil.
Amsoil Synthetic Motorcycle oil:

the ratings for a 1990 bike would fall in the SG or SH rated oils... Catrol GTX 20w50 is hard to beat and much less expensive, readily available virtually everywhere, SJ rated.
as long as you are servicing regular, it should be fine... no real need to pay the higher amounts of money for the BMW oil in my opinion...
10w - 30 synthetic
G" Day I've got a 1990 BMW K-1 , since new and run Motul 20-50 in mine , But any good quality oil ; is fine , I've had BMW's all my life and have found with the K series after the first 50,000 Km any good oil , pending on your climate { summer or Winter etc}
