What does it mean when my VW Jetta RPMs go to 0 While driving 70 on the highway and the car is still running?

I have a 2001 VW Jetta GLS 5 sp std. and my RPMs went to 0 While I was driving on the highway at 70mph and the car was still running, the car did a little shutter and all I did was push my clutch in and the RPMs went back to normal. Does anyone else have this problem? What can I do about this, and does anyone have any suggestions on what the problem could be.
