I purchased a CPO 2007 BMW 328i two weeks ago and the mileage is reaching close to 50,000 miles. The mechanical warranty will expire in 2013 so that's all set but there is an option to purchase the maintenance warranty for a little over $2,000. Should I pay for the maintenance package? Is it wise to purchase the maintenance warranty for a BMW?Ask a lot of questions before you purchase the maintenance warranty:
1. What's covered? What's excluded?
2. Who's selling you the warranty - your CPO BMW dealer (from a 3rd party warrantor)? Are you paying the CPO BMW dealer direct for this warranty?
3. If so, is that warrantor still going to be around when the maintenance warranty kicks in?
4. Is your CPO BMW dealer going to stand behind that warrantor? (since, in effect that warrantor is the dealer's "agent")
In general, I would say the $2k investment may be money well spent. (Have you seen the service records for the car? Generally cars that qualify for BMW's CPO program have been well-maintained and have been gone over quite thoroughly, not every car qualifies.) The major systems prone to failure after 5 yrs or so are automatic transmissions, HVAC, and electrical The replacement of these GM-sourced auto trannys alone can be upwards of $4k...Is it wise to purchase the maintenance warranty for a BMW?
good question - I had a 2000 528i that I kept until 138,000 miles. At the time I sold it, I had spent only part of the $2,000 you mention on repairs. However, I did not replace the windshield washer pump for $800, and doubt it would have been warranted.
My CPO dealer sold me the maintenance extension for my 2008 535i, and I have not touched it, yet. My car does need a new H8 lamp on the right side, but other than that it is running great. Is it wise to purchase the maintenance warranty for a BMW?No it is not wise... the waranty usally cost more to buy then any repairs you may have to pay for. Also a lot of places will not honor these waranties any more or the waranty itself will not pay, so you still lose.Is it wise to purchase the maintenance warranty for a BMW?
yes, bmw's are very expensive to repair, but before you take it out, if you do, check whats covered by the warranty, if all the expensive stuff, like clutch, gearbox etc are not included dont bother. Is it wise to purchase the maintenance warranty for a BMW?yes you should, because if something should happen to it that you need to take it apart and work on it then they will do it for you.
