I bought a used 91 BMW 520i and there's an electronic device located on the center console next to the e-brake. I think someone swapped out the motor for an M5 series motor, because it's not stock. I wasn't sure if it was something for the radio, or a performance part. It's broken whatever it is.

Usually that is where the Airbag Module is placed to protect it from most anything.
Better read the part no. instead and add it to your posting. Do not invert or drop that thing, or touch it with static electricity present in your hand/body.
At the very least it could be some kind of accelerometer.
