What is the problem with my 1994 BMW td which starts well when the engine is cold but has a hard start hot?

I live in Nairobi Kenya. There are only about 20 or so BMW 325 td here. Therefore the expertise on this car is hard to come by. I bought this one about 2 months ago. It runs beautifully on the road - Until you stop, say to refuel. Then it develops a very hard start. And the smoke fom the exhaust is too much.

I took it through diagnostics. The engine electricals were found to be alright. So were the injector noozles. Compression tests results were: Cylinder 1- 27.1; 2-19.5; 3-22.5; 4-17.0; 5-24.5 and Cylinder 6 - 20.0.

Some engineers think that the engine should be overhauled. Others reject this and maintain that the car would not start so well when cold if indeed this were the problem.

Would you please have any answers to this problem? What is the problem with my 1994 BMW td which starts well when the engine is cold but has a hard start hot?Sounds like you are having a compression problem. When the engine is cold, the diesel heaters are increasing the temperature of the fuel to a level so the compression of the engine become sufficient for the cold start. When the engine is warm, the heaters are not active and compression is not enough to start up. But if you crank long enoug, the dynamic comp builds up and the engine starts. Sound like you need a rebuild. I would suggest replacing the piston rings. This should solve your problem. I would not worry about the smoke. It happens because of the partially burned, accumulated fuel being exhausted at once. Also, those comp measurement numbers does not look right. Anything over 22 is pretty much impossible for a static TD measurement. What is the problem with my 1994 BMW td which starts well when the engine is cold but has a hard start hot?it might just be overheated, take it to a different shop and have them check it over...always get a second opinion. What is the problem with my 1994 BMW td which starts well when the engine is cold but has a hard start hot?I'd go for the oxygen sensor. Check it,especially if you said there is smoke going out . This means fuel/air ratio is wrong.

If you experienced poor mpg recently,it should also point to oxygen sensor as well.
